On the 29th of March, 2020, Germany recorded its 58247th case of the Covid-19-causing coronavirus. If we were to map it out, the result would look something like this:
It looks similar to this album art - by a politically-incorrect rock band dating back to 2015 - showing what tolerant politicians were likely to let into Germany:
At the time, Western Europe's politicians and ideologues were following an ideology that increased the likelihood of a foreign virus becoming a continental pandemic (see: High-Risk Ebola: what were the chances it could have reached France and UK?); today, Western Europe is led by politicians who are guided by the same impulses as their predecessors and prone to make the same mistakes, which does well to explain why we have this COVID-19 pandemic in Western Europe.
In January 2020, as news of COVID-19 spread, Italy's incompetent leaders failed to ban or even quarantine incoming flights from affected regions. They even advised Italians to hug those who looked like they were from the affected regions, i.e. China. Not surprisingly, Italy became the new epicenter of COVID-19. Keen to deflect this narrative, Italy has suggested that its trouble began with the Italian contact of a man who got the virus from a Chinese business guest in Germany. The deflection overlooks the negligence on Italy's behalf, which led to the infection of dozens due to the absence of a quarantine.
But that does not exculpate Germany, either. Led by Angela Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) political party, Germany refused to ban flights from the affected regions. On February 26th, Jens Spahn (CDU) proclaimed that there was "no need" to advise Germans not to travel anywhere. Ironically, in 2019, Spahn was in Africa as part of a project entitled "health knows no boundaries":
As we have written before, perhaps we can best understand Spahn's assessment knowing that he supports Armin Laschet (CDU), who has marginal interest in preserving German forestland, considers Palestinian textbooks "Nazi propaganda" and has made opposing the "boycott Israel movement" a priority. In terms of loyalties, this sounds a lot like the outlook of Martin Schulz (SPD), a supposedly "rival" German politician who proudly proclaimed that "Germany exists only to secure the Israeli state and people." So, should we really be surprised to see that these politicians are not of the mindset to prioritize their own population's health and survival?
Even to this day, Germany is still allowing non-European refugees to cross its borders, making the spread of the virus impossible to track should any migrants become infected. One would think the Truppe of politicians who allowed this would be universally loathed for endangering millions of their own people. After all, they allowed the country to become a pink-freckled mess:
And that mess, which is sending thousands to the hospital, has collapsed the German economy. But take a look at the latest polling data by the German news source Der Tagesspiegel, which suggests that about half the country (49%) favorably approves of the German government's handling of the crisis:
Moreover, although checking in with only 2500 people, the Forsa Institute has just reported that Germany's CDU political party is at its highest level of popularity in nearly three years:
How can this be, considering the uptick in popularity began amidst criticism that CDU-leader Merkel had disappeared and, as the COVID-19-causing coronavirus spread, had said next to nothing..
Moreover, now that Merkel has finally shown her face, she has said perhaps the most controversial thing of her entire career: that Germany now faces its biggest challenge since World War II; recall that, for years, nobody could even play games on the side of Germany. But here is ethno-masochist and politically-correct Merkel rallying the German people in a way that, at least implicitly, suggests that Germany came together in common and united action during World War II and will now do so again. This opens the door for German people to compare their struggle to that of their ancestors, in a parallel that humanizes the German participants in the latter. You would think the politically correct German public would be seething mad, the press would be fuming and heads would be exploding at Germany's Central Council of Jews. But no. Instead, Merkel and the CDU are polling extremely well in comparison to the last couple of months.
Perhaps the population appreciates that supplies were hoarded, and there are a low number of COVID-19 deaths in Germany thus far, leading the public to believe that its leaders are handling the crisis well.
Or maybe the public is impressed by the border closures that have finally taken place, or has not caught wind of the "refugees still welcome" stipulation that was attached, because the fakenews was inclined to lie about it (1, 2).
Perhaps the polls are simply rigged, and the numbers are not right. Or maybe this is just another "invest in the leader and hope for the best" scenario, as the Führerprinzip strikes again.
Whichever the scenario, heil dir, Deutschland. Heal yourself - starting with the mind.
