Hesse is a state in Germany that includes Europe's financial capital, Frankfurt, which is unaffectionately referred to as "Bankfurt". Here you will find the European Central Bank, the German Federal Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Trade Fair, as well as the headquarters of several large commercial banks.
There is not a lot on the internet about Schaefer spanning the last decade. For that, we probably have the European Union's "right to be forgotten" (internet privacy regulations) to thank. It could also be because this man lived, ate and breathed finance and only occasionally came up for air.
As for his digital footprint, we see a string of speeches where he lectures on topics like "wow, we have a really great tax authorities" and "we must be sure to leave behind a competent state for the next generation", which comes across as something like David Lane's 14 words (it is 14 words, after all), repurposed for the boardroom-and-briefcase culture and globally-diverse economic state.
Schaefer also played around with large sums of money, putting it in some places and taking the heat for putting it in other places. He literally gave his life to finance.
In Germany, those who support the idea of ethnic sovereignty, self-determination and the ethno-state constantly hear "dur hurr follow your leader." The idea here is that people who think like this must be stopped "because Hitler", so it is perfectly acceptable to wish that they go kill themselves, telling them to do what Hitler supposedly did as World War II came to an end. But now that outsourcing everything to China and insourcing the Coronavirus has completely blown apart the global economy, and now that a financial leader has killed himself in connection with the corporate business market empire going belly up, I guess we are supposed to be the good guys and just offer our condolences. Funny how that works. Meanwhile, suddenly Twitter is in tears over Schaefer, who is being presented as a victim. Suddenly, his wealth, affiliations, gender and skin color do not matter to anyone, and he is no longer considered "privileged". Why is that?
The state finance minister of Germany’s Hesse region, which includes Frankfurt, has been found dead. Authorities said he appears to have killed himself and the state’s governor suggested Sunday that he was in despair over the fallout from the coronavirus crisis.
The body of Thomas Schaefer, a 54-year-old member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, was found Saturday on railway tracks at Hochheim, near Frankfurt. Police and prosecutors said that factors including questioning of witnesses and their own observations at the scene led them to conclude that Schaefer killed himself.
State governor Volker Bouffier linked Schaefer’s death to the virus crisis on Sunday.
Bouffier said Schaefer was worried about “whether it would be possible to succeed in fulfilling the population’s huge expectations, particularly of financial help.”
“I have to assume that these worries overwhelmed him,” Bouffier said. “He apparently couldn’t find a way out. He was in despair and left us.”
Germany’s federal and state governments have drawn up huge aid packages to cushion the blow of largely shutting down public life to slow the spread of COVID-19. Schaefer had been Hesse’s state finance minister for a decade.
