White privilege: all shoppers in California forced to wear masks except for Ku Klux Klan members

To stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, San Diego has a policy in place, since May 1, 2020, that "require[s] the public to wear face coverings when within six feet of other people."

Or not.

As the San Diego Tribune reports:
A man wore a Ku Klux Klan hood while grocery shopping in a Vons in Santee over the weekend, igniting outrage from elected leaders, the head of the Anit-Defamation League in San Diego and others.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on Monday said detectives were “looking into the matter and will pursue any appropriate criminal charges.” Spokesman Lt. Ricardo Lopez said the matter was being looked at as a hate incident, which could rise to the level of a hate crime “if supported by facts.”

"The Sheriff’s Department does not condone hate or any acts of intolerance in our communities," the department said in a statement in response to Saturday’s incident. “We are a county that is welcoming of people from all backgrounds.”

Photos shared on social media show the man pushing a cart in the store’s produce area and holding a plastic produce bag while wearing the white hood. At least one photo shows the man, who appears to be white and middle-aged, standing behind the cart without a hood.

A corporate spokeswoman said grocery clerks repeatedly asked the man to remove the hood or leave the store, located in a shopping center on Mission Gorge Road. A supervisor found the man once he was in a checkout line and asked him again to take off the hood or leave, said Melissa Hill, a spokeswoman for Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions stores in Southern California.

The man removed the hood, purchased his items and left.

It seems the ordinance should be rewritten: due to COVID-19, you must wear a mask when shopping, unless it is a mask we do not like, in which case just take it off and go shopping anyway."

Which, to me, does not make a whole lot of sense and goes against the rationale of having people wear masks in the first place. But maybe I am just one who does not understand - just like I do not understand why police were ignoring social distancing and declining to wear protective masks while arresting a guy who was all alone at sea and violating the state lockdown order.

Maybe we should ask the aforementioned "Anit-Defamation League" (sic) for clarification about these rules - and to make sure we know what shopping masks we can wear so that we do not have to take them off and potentially expose everyone to the danger of the coronavirus:
