Liberation Day: May 1945

On this day in 1945, eight days after Nazi Germany's leader Adolf Hitler killed himself or disappeared, Nazi Germany was decisively defeated in an event called the Second World War. Accordingly, this day has come to take on a special significance in the Western world and its commemoration is used to various ends.

For Europe, the 8th of May is designated as a day to "remember" why one should never support national anything "because nationalism leads to war" and "because Hitler"; for the United States, the 8th of May is a day when, ironically, that same narrative about war and Hitler is used to agitate for war under the pretext that "country x is literally like Hitler."

Accordingly, in both cases, the 8th of May is a day when the events of the last century are completely reordered, and everyone forgets the situation before Hitler, as well as who funded him from the early days on, and why.
